Welcome to the New Day One Navigation Layout

We’re excited to introduce some changes to your Day One Journal navigation experience in version 2024.11. This update marks the initial phase of a series of significant updates and new features slated for Day One, all aimed at enriching your journaling experience.

What’s New in 2024.11

This update includes a redesigned navigation and a cleaner, more intuitive interface across the app.

Navigation Bar

  • Simplified Header: We’ve removed the larger journal header in favor of a consistent navigation bar across all views, including List, Calendar, Map, and Media.
  • Improved Layout: The journal title is now aligned to the left, and the search icon and avatar are aligned to the right for easier access.
  • Menu Access: The hamburger menu icon remains on the left, providing quick access to all app features.

Tabbed Menu

  • Centralized Tabs: The various views are now located at the top of the view, making navigation between different sections smoother.
  • Home Tab: When a new journal is created, you’ll land on the Home Tab, which will display journal information and stats. This tab remembers the last selected state, improving continuity between sessions.

Home Tab Details

  • Interactive Info: Journal stats and descriptions are readily available. You can also preview your printed book of the journal.
  • Settings and Export: Use the three dots to quickly export or modify the journal’s settings.

Syncing Indicator

  • The syncing indicator is now combined with your profile photo. Tap your profile photo to open settings in a full-screen modal view. This allows for a quick check on your sync status without cluttering the interface.

Addressing Your Feedback to the New Navigation Design

We appreciate the candid feedback we’ve received since the release of this new design. Here’s how we are addressing your concerns and suggestions:

Voice Over Accessibility

We are aware of the issues with Voice Over accessibility, particularly the clarity of button labels and navigation ease. A fix is in development to address these concerns, ensuring that all users can navigate the app effectively.

Enhancing Color and Journal Identification

Feedback indicated a preference for a more colorful interface and clearer identification of journals. We are exploring ways to reintroduce color elements and distinct visual cues without reverting to the previous, bulkier design elements.

Interface Navigation

The placement of tabs at the top of the page has been noted as cumbersome by some users. We are considering reintroducing a bottom navigation bar for more accessible, one-handed operation on larger devices.

Journal Features and Stats

A new Cover Tab will be iterated to better showcase journal stats and favorites. We’re planning a more visually engaging design that makes essential stats and journal features more accessible and prominent.

Sync Status and Reliability

The removal of the explicit sync status icon has led to some confusion. We plan to introduce more intuitive indicators that provide clear feedback on the sync status to reassure users that their data is secure and up-to-date.

Backdating Entries

We recognize the importance of easily backdating entries for those transferring or maintaining historical records. We are committed to enhancing this feature to make it more intuitive and accessible within the new interface design.

Looking Forward

Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to refine and enhance Day One. This update is just the beginning, and we are excited to continue evolving Day One with your help.

Thank you for being a part of the Day One community. We look forward to your continued feedback and are eager to make your journaling experience the best it can be.
