In iOS version 2024.19, we’ve made some changes that we’d like to explain further. We know these updates have affected some of your journaling workflows, and we want to take a moment to address your concerns and share the reasoning behind these decisions.
Classic Timeline Toggle
The Classic Timeline toggle has been removed in this update. This toggle was originally introduced as a temporary feature, but maintaining two different versions of the timeline became unsustainable. Removing this toggle allows us to speed up development and ensure a consistent experience across iOS, Android, and the Web. We understand that this will be an adjustment for those who preferred the old view, and we hope you’ll give the updated timeline a chance. The new design is a big step toward a more unified and reliable journaling experience.
Markdown Tables
We’ve also removed markdown table rendering in HTML. While markdown tables were available on iOS, they were buggy and difficult to maintain, especially since Android and Web didn’t support them. Now, all tables will display as plain text markdown, affecting both previous and new entries. We know many of you relied on markdown tables in your entries, and while they are no longer rendering, we’re working to improve consistency across all platforms.
Why These Changes Were Made
As Day One continues to evolve across multiple platforms, maintaining consistency and stability becomes more challenging. By streamlining the app’s features, we can focus on delivering a better overall experience for all users, regardless of the device they use. These changes also free up our development resources, allowing us to bring new features and improvements faster.
We Hear You
We recognize that it feels like these features were removed without warning, and we’re truly sorry for not communicating these changes in advance. We’re committed to being more transparent moving forward and appreciate your candid feedback. Your input helps us refine Day One and continue building a better journaling experience for everyone.
Looking Forward
These changes are part of our ongoing effort to create a more cohesive, user-friendly app. We’re excited about the improvements coming in future updates and are grateful for your continued support. Thank you for being part of the Day One community, and as always, we’re here to listen to your feedback.
