Why are my first lines sometimes – but not always – bolded?

Auto-bold first line in Day One

In Day One, the first line of a new entry is automatically formatted as a title (larger, bold text). This is the entry’s title. When you press Return after the first line, the formatting switches to normal body text for the rest of your entry.

The auto-title formatting applies when the first line is less than 100 characters and is followed by a line break.

This behavior is controlled by the Auto Title First Line setting, which is enabled by default. To turn it on or off:

  • In the iOS app, go to Settings > Appearance.
  • In the Mac app, go to Settings > Appearance.
  • In the web app, go to Settings > Entries.
