Daily Chat is a new experimental way to journal with Day One. Simply chat with AI about your day, and your conversation can be turned into a thoughtful journal entry that reflects your words and mood. You can switch between Chat mode for deeper conversations or Log mode for quick notes, and even continue past chats to add new insights over time.
Daily Chat is exclusively available to Day One Premium users who through Settings > Labs on iPhone/iPad, Android, and Day One on the web.
Key Features
- Conversational Journaling – Talk about your day in a natural, back-and-forth chat. Daily Chat helps you reflect and journal through conversation.
- Smart Entry Generation – Your chats can be turned into journal entries that capture your words, tone, and mood, keeping your reflections organized in Day One.
- Chat & Log Modes – Choose Chat Mode for open-ended conversations, or Log Mode for quick notes and short reflections. Switch between the two modes anytime.
- Contextual Prompts – As you chat, AI may ask relevant follow-up questions to help you go deeper into your thoughts, emotions, or daily experiences.
- Update & Resume Conversations – Revisit and continue previous chats to add new insights or update existing journal entries as your day evolves.
Privacy & Security
Daily Chat is a fully opt-in feature built with the same privacy and security standards that Day One is known for. Your participation is completely optional, and you’ll only use AI features if you choose to turn them on in Settings > Labs.
When you chat with AI, only the messages you choose to send are temporarily processed to generate responses or journal entries. Conversations are securely transmitted using encrypted protocols (HTTPS) and are never stored or used for AI training. Once processing is complete, content is deleted from both our servers and those of our AI partners.
If your journals are end-to-end encrypted, content is temporarily decrypted on your device only while the AI generates a response, then re-encrypted immediately afterward.
We’re continuously exploring on-device AI models to make these experiences even more private in the future. Until then, you remain in full control. AI features can be turned off at any time from Settings › Labs › AI features.
How to Get Started
- Ensure you’ve updated to Day One iOS version 2025.22 or higher.
- Open Day One and navigate to Profile › Settings › Labs.
- Toggle on Enable Labs, then the toggles for AI Features and then Daily Chat.
- Once enabled, a new Today tab will appear in the bottom navigation.
- Tap the new Today tab to get started. You’ll see a new Daily Chat section. Tap Chat to get started.
- A prompt or question will start the chat to help you get started. Start chatting to continue the conversation with your journal.
- When you’ve finished chatting, tap the black check mark in the upper right corner to exit the chat.
- Once you’ve ended the chat, you’ll see an option to Resume Chat or Generate Entry. Tap the Generate Entry button to create an entry from your chat.
- On the first entry creation from Daily Chat, you can select where to store your Daily Chat entries. Select the Create “Daily” Journal option to create a new dedicated journal for your chats, or you can choose Select Existing Journal to use an existing journal.
- You’ll then see a new entry created from your chat that reflects your chat.
- At any point, you can also resume the chat. Back on the Today tab, you can tap Resume Chat to keep chatting. You can then tap Update Entry to add your new chats into your entry.
- Back in the Daily Chat window, tap the three dot menu in the left to see additional settings for Daily Chat. From here, you can activate Log Mode (which sends no response). This mode can be helpful for quick notes or capturing daily details that can still be used to generate an entry. You can also tap Regenerate for new chat question.
Daily Chat is also available on Android.

- A prompt or question will start the chat to help you get started. Start chatting to continue the conversation with your journal.
- When you’ve finished chatting, click the Generate Entry button in the top toolbar. You’ll then see an entry created fro your chat.
