Photo Optimization

Photos in Day One are optimized when imported

Current Behavior (Full-Resolution Photos)

As of iOS version 3.2 and Mac version 2.9.1, Day One stores photos at full resolution. Photos added after updating to these versions are no longer resized or compressed. There is no setting to toggle between full-resolution and reduced-resolution — all new photos are stored at full resolution automatically.

Note: If you’re looking to reduce the amount of storage Day One uses on your device, see Optimize Device Storage. That feature controls whether media is cached locally on your device, but does not affect the resolution of your photos.

In-App Camera

When you take a photo using Day One on your iPhone or iPad, by default the original, full-resolution image is not saved to your Photo Library. You can change this in Day One Settings > Advanced > Save a copy to Photo Library (under In-App Camera).

Legacy Behavior (Older Versions)

In versions prior to iOS 3.2 and Mac 2.9.1, photos imported into Day One were converted to JPEG format and resized to a maximum resolution of 2100 pixels. Silver or Gold users had an increased resolution of 3200 pixels. The aspect ratio was maintained. At this size, the average photo was about 700 KB to 1.5 MB.
