Dark Mode

How to enable Dark Mode in Day One on iOS and macOS

iOS

To enable dark mode, go to Day One > tap on your profile picture to open Settings > Appearance > Theme. Choose between on a scheduled basis or Dark.

Android

To enable dark mode, go to Settings > Appearance > Theme. Choose Dark as your preferred theme.

macOS

Starting in version 2.9 and macOS 10.14 Mojave, Dark Mode can be enabled. This is done in the System Settings > Appearance. Choose the Dark option at the top. Day One will then be in dark mode.

macOS App Icon in Dark Mode

The Day One app icon on macOS does not currently have a dark mode variant. On macOS 26 (Tahoe) and later, where the system supports automatic dark mode icons, the Day One icon will not change appearance when you switch to dark mode. This is a known limitation, and a dark mode icon is planned for a future update.

Web App

To enable dark mode in the Day One web app, go to https://dayone.me/ > click on Settings – the gear icon in the top left corner > select Appearance > choose Dark as the new theme for your Day One account.

Windows

Dark mode can be enabled by clicking on Settings – the gear icon in the top left corner > select Appearance > choose Dark as the new theme.

Adjusting Journal Colors in Dark Mode

If the journal cover color is too bright for you in dark mode, you can adjust the journal color to a darker shade, such as Charcoal. This should reduce the contrast and alleviate eye strain. To do this, go to Settings > Journals and select the journal you want to change by clicking on the “i” icon.
