Journaling Suggestions
We’re excited to bring a few new ways to jumpstart your journaling with new Journaling Suggestions in iOS 18. These new Journaling Suggestions for iOS 18 include “Reflections” prompts, media from third-party apps like Spotify and Pocket Casts, State of Mind, and Motion Activity Updates. We hope these updates will help you capture more of life as you live it—whether through your thoughts, emotions, the music you listen to, or the activities you do.
Getting Started
The new Journaling Suggestions are available exclusively for Day One for iPhone beginning in version 2024.20. You’ll also need to update to iOS 18.
- After updating, go to the Settings App > Privacy & Security > Journaling Suggestions and enable what you want to see in your Suggestions.
- To get started with any of the new Journaling Suggestions, create a new entry in your Day One journal.
- Tap the Suggestions icon at the bottom of the screen to view your Journaling Suggestions.

Reflections Prompts
In addition to the Day One daily writing prompt, you can now view a simple writing prompt that can spark insights or help you process what’s been on your mind. These prompts are embedded directly into your entry, giving you space to expand on your reflections at your own pace. To view a new reflection prompt, you can also tap the refresh icon.

New Media Sources
Enrich your journaling experience with personalized media suggestions. Now, you might see suggestions based on songs or podcasts you’ve recently listened to from third-party apps like Spotify or Pocket Casts. These suggestions aren’t just random—they’re based on your recent listening habits, helping you connect your journaling to the media that’s been inspiring you lately.

Currently, third-party media suggestions are a static reference in your journal entry. The Journaling Suggestions feature does NOT continuously sync all your listening history. Instead, it selectively offers suggestions based on notable media you’ve consumed. This is not an automatic daily sync of all content from Spotify or Pocket Casts. We’re continuing to explore how to make third-party suggestions more dynamic, such as linking them directly to the Spotify track or Pocket Casts podcast episode.
State of Mind
The new State of Mind Suggestions integrate with the Health app to help you log your moods and emotions over time. By syncing your logged emotions and moods with your Day One journal, you’ll be able to explore how your mental state connects with your daily experiences.
To get started, visit the Health App > Browse > Mental Wellbeing > State of Mind > Log. From here, you can log an emotion or mood about how you’re feeling in the Health App. Once your Journaling Suggestions refresh over time, you’ll start to see the new State of Mind Journaling Suggestions. Tap the Suggestions to bring them into an entry, where you can write more about your feelings and reflect on your mental wellbeing.

Motion Activity Updates
Reflect on a recent walk, run, or a mix of both. This update connects your physical activity to your journaling practice after the fact, helping you draw insights about your mind-body connection. It’s a small update, but it helps you connect your physical activity with your writing moments, after the fact—just like logging a workout.
