Daily Writing Prompts
How to use writing prompts to create Day One entries.
Writing prompts give you inspiration and interesting topics to write about daily. A new writing prompt appears every day.
Prompts are now available to all languages, but the prompt will be in English. Prompts are available on iOS, Android, MacOS, and the Web and Windows apps.
iOS
Prompts are enabled by default on all devices with English as the primary language. Go to Day One > Settings > Daily Prompt to disable this feature.

On iPad or Plus/Max iPhone devices in landscape mode, the writing prompt will appear on the right panel. Tap the prompt or tap “Answer” to answer the prompt in a new journal entry.
On iPhone, or Plus/Max iPhone devices in portrait mode, tap “More…” to View the Daily Prompt. Then, tap the question to answer the prompt. Tap “See more” to view additional prompts.
On iPad tap “… More” above the list of Journals to view the Daily Prompt.
Tap and hold on the prompt to reveal other options like View Entry, Answer Again, or view Recent Prompts.

Daily Prompt iOS Widget
Starting in iOS 14, users can add the Daily Prompt widget to their Today View or Home Screen. Refer to this guide to know more about the Daily Prompt widget and the various other widgets that Day One offers.
macOS
Starting in v.2025.18, the daily prompt has been moved from the journal summary view (also known as the journal cover view) to the “More” view.
You can click “More” in the top of the left sidebar, and then see the Daily Prompt along with ‘On This Day’ and Streaks. Tap to Answer to start a new entry with that writing prompt. These can be disabled in Day One > Settings > General > uncheck the box for Daily Prompt.
Right-click (or Control+click) the prompt on macOS to see additional options like Recent Prompts.
Android
Prompts are now in Day One for Android, starting with version 2024.14. To enable them, go to Day One > Settings > Daily Prompt. You can enable a notification here for the prompt if desired. Additionally, you can specify a tag and Journal for your answers to the Daily Prompt.
In the Journal view tap “More…” to view the Daily Prompt. Then, tap “Answer prompt” to answer the prompt. Tap the button with intertwined arrows to “Shuffle” and view a different prompt. Tap “See more” to view recent prompts. Tap a prompt from the list to start a new journal entry and answer the question.
Web app and Windows app
The Daily Prompt will appear on the first column below the list of journals. Tap “Answer” to create a new entry to answer the writing prompt. Or, click the three-dot menu to view the following options: “Dismiss Today’s Prompt”, “See Recent Prompts”, and select “Don’t show Prompts”.
Click Settings (gear icon) > Daily Prompts to deactivate or activate Daily Prompts, select a journal to save entries, and assign a tag to entries created when using the prompt.
