Book Printing

Creating and ordering printed books in Day One for iOS

Day One has helped millions of people worldwide easily capture life as they live it. To help you preserve and share these memories, we’re pleased to introduce Day One Book.

All prices are in USD. We hope to support more payment options in the future.

Import fees may be assessed for international orders, and they are paid by the buyer. There may be country-specific import requirements requiring additional information or documentation as well.

Book Printing is only available on iOS through our Book Printing feature and is not yet available for Android users. Day One does not support directly printing journals from PDF files or any other method.

Book Dimensions

Books are 5.5″ by 8.5″

Book thickness depends on the number of pages in your book.

Pricing

$19.99 USD for the first 50 pages (color), and then an additional $0.10 per page.

Hardcover is available for $3.75 per book.

You’ll see the estimated shipping cost at checkout.

Page Limits and Multiple Books

Each Day One book has a hard limit of 384 pages and a soft limit of 359 pages. The soft limit is triggered when entries contain a lot of content (photos, long text, etc.) that would push the total past 384 pages. When this happens, the app caps the first book at 359 pages to stay safely within the limit.

When there are more entries than will fit within the 384 page limit of a single book, Day One will prompt you to create an additional book.

When you go to the Cart after previewing your first book, you will see a prompt to create the next book in the series. This process is repeated for each additional book required.

Ordering a Printed Journal

Accessing Book Printing menu

To get started, open Settings (tap on the profile picture in the top right corner), scroll down, then tap Book Printing.

“Create a Book”

Select the journals you wish to be printed, then tap Next.

Select Years

Choose the years you want included. Specific date ranges or additional filters (e.g., tags, monthly map pages, specific entries, etc.) can be applied in the next step.  Tap Next.

Edit the Cover

In the process of ordering a book, you can change its cover photo, color, rear photos, adjust its title, dates, author, etc. Tap Save when you are done.

Keep in mind that editing the cover of a printed book will not change the appearance of a journal in the app.

Edit and filter the Content

Click “Edit” under the Content section to make adjustments in the journal content. From here, you can set the scope of the content by selecting the Journals, Date Range, or by using filters such as Only Include Tags, Exclude Tags, or by selecting Excluded Entries.

You can also adjust the font and font size for the printed book embedded media (Text, Photos, Videos, Audio, PDF), metadata (Date, Time, Location, Weather, Tags), and other information (Page Numbers, Cover Page, Monthly Stats Page, Maps).

Note on Map Pages: Map pages are generated once for each month and will aggregate all locations from entries created within that month onto a single map page. It is not currently possible to add individual map pages for each separate location.

At this time, further customizations, like rearranging photos, are not possible.

Tap Save when you are done.

Preview Book as a PDF file

Here you will be able to see each page as it will appear in the printed book. Please review it here to make sure it looks like you want.  Tap Next to go to the Cart.

Add to Cart

Add new books or proceed.

If there are more entries than will fit within the 384 page limit of a single book, Day One will show an indication in the Cart to create a new book for the remaining entries.

Checkout

Tap Checkout to upload the book and pay.

We offer two pay options: Apple Pay and credit/debit cards (supported by Stripe). Here is more info from those providers about how they protect your data:

Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203027
Stripe: https://stripe.com/docs/security/stripe

If you use Apple Pay, the payment and shipping details will come from the Wallet & Apple Pay settings on your device.  The address can be verified before you complete the purchase with Touch ID/Face ID.

Important Note Regarding Quantity:

The “1 book” text displayed under the “price” label refers to the quantity of each individual book selected, not the total number of books in your order. For example, if you have multiple different books in your cart and the quantity shows “1,” it means you are purchasing one copy of each book in your cart. You can adjust the quantity for each book before proceeding to checkout. The quantity reflects the number of copies per unique book.

Important Note for International Orders:

Import fees may be assessed for international orders, and they are paid by the buyer.

Please include all shipping information in English, and be ready to provide the following information upon the shipping partner’s request. These may be necessary per country-specific import requirements, and you may be contacted to provide additional information or documentation as well.

  • Complete and correct importer name (must be the full name)
  • Valid phone number
  • Complete importer address
  • Correct email add
  • Company Name (if any)

Order Status

Go to Day One > Settings > Book Printing > tap Orders. This will give you the status of your order.  You can cancel a book order within a short timeframe. If the option to cancel does not appear, the order cannot be canceled.

We do not currently have expedited shipping options or guaranteed delivery dates. We recommend ordering at least one month ahead of the desired arrival date to allow for unforeseen delays in printing and shipping, such as weather, high volume around holidays, customs (for international orders), etc.

Starting in version 5.8, tracking is available for printed books from within the app. Go to Day One > Settings > Book Printing > tap the Orders tab > tap a book order and tracking information will be available once shipped.

For the printing and shipping timelines, please refer to this guide: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/tracking-and-shipping-information-for-day-one-books/

Orders are shipped using UPS Mail Innovations. UPS carries the parcel to a last-mile carrier, usually local postal service.

Reordering Books Based on a Previous Order

Once you’ve ordered a book, it will no longer appear in the “Books” tab.

To view and re-order a book based on a previous order, you can click on the “Order Again” button on the order page, which will create a new book with the same parameters (e.g., date range, journals, tags, title, color, etc.). The button can be found at the bottom of the order screen, as shown in the screenshot below.

Printing Books from Journals Created on non-iOS devices

Although books can only be created on an iOS device, users who primarily use the Android, Mac, Windows, and Web apps can still print books if they have access to an iOS device where Day One is installed.

As long as Day One Sync is working as expected, entries created on the Android, Mac, Windows, and Web apps can still be included for book printing through the iOS app.

Book Printing Issues

In some rare cases, book printing issues may occur. If you do notice something off about your order, please reach out to customer support for further assistance.

Day One > Settings > Support > Contact Support

It is very helpful to provide your order number, screenshots, and pictures of the issue you’re reporting.

If a book is printed, and it matches the print preview, then Day One will not be responsible for the mistake, as this would have been displayed in the print preview. It is important to look through the whole preview to make sure exactly what you want is being printed.

If you encounter an issue with the book after placing the order, and it differs from the preview, kindly send a screenshot of the print preview and a picture of the actual book.

To view the Preview:

  • Day One > Settings > Book Printing > Books > Tap on the book > Preview Pages

Printing Guideline

Our external printing partner, responsible for producing printed journals, may decline to proceed with printing your journal due to Objectionable Material.

Objectionable Material shall mean any material that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, tortious, defamatory, libelous, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, lewd, profane, invasive of another’s privacy, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, or otherwise objectionable, and in violation of applicable laws, including but not limited to state and federal laws protecting minors and incompetent persons. Objectionable Material also includes images that depict explicit or pornographic sexual positions or any male or female genitalia. Bare breasts and lingerie photoshoots typically do not fit the above definition and are acceptable to send if there is no exposure of genitalia.

The decision will be made following their guidelines and policies, which are beyond our direct control.

FAQ

I realized I made a mistake after submitting an order. How do I make changes? Can you make changes on your end?

It’s not possible to make changes to the book printing order after you submit an order. We do not have access to your book printing content to make changes for you.

Please cancel the order as soon as possible once you’ve realized you need to modify the order. To do so, please go to Day One > Settings > Book Printing > tap Orders. This will give you the status of your order.  You can cancel a book order within a short timeframe. If the option to cancel does not appear, it indicates that your order has been processed and the book is being printed or being shipped, and therefore, your order cannot be cancelled.
