Drawing in Day One for iOS

How to draw in Day One on iPhone or iPad with your finger or Apple Pencil (iPad only).

Basic drawing is now available in Day One iOS starting in version 3.4. You can use your finger or Apple Pencil (iPad only). Drawing is a Premium feature. Scribble is available to all users. Drawing is only available in the iOS version and is not currently supported on Android.

Drawing

Tap to start a new blank entry, then tap the paper clip icon above the keyboard and choose Draw. If Draw is not in the short menu, tap More > Draw.

Tap Done at the top right to save the drawing.

To edit a drawing, tap the drawing in the entry, then tap Edit. This will allow you to add to the drawing, but original edits cannot be edited.

Currently, the drawing tool only supports one page. In order to add more, a new entry needs to be created for another drawing.

Scribble

iOS 14 also offers the Scribble feature from iOS. Use Apple Pencil to write directly in the entry body and text is converted to typed text.

Known Issue: Black Pen Appears White in Drawing Mode (Dark Mode)

We’ve identified an issue with the drawing view when using the pen tool in dark mode. The pen, which is intended to be black, appears white when dark mode is enabled. This behavior is related to the way Apple’s system handles color changes between light mode and dark mode.

The drawing view relies on Apple’s system drawing tools, which use a color called “label.” This color automatically changes from black in light mode to white in dark mode. As a result, when using dark mode, the black pen tool displays as white, which can be frustrating for those who expect the pen to remain black.

Currently, there isn’t a fix available from our end, as this behavior is controlled by Apple’s system. However, there’s a workaround: if you disable dark mode on your device while using the drawing feature, the black pen will appear as expected.
