Add an email/password to your Day One Sync account with Apple ID or Google Account
How to add an email address and password to your existing Day One Sync account with Apple ID
If you signed in to Day One with your Apple ID or Google account and want to access your journals on other platforms – such as Android, Windows, or the web – you can add an email and password to your existing Day One Sync account. This is also useful if you want to migrate away from Apple ID-only sign-in, or if you want a traditional email and password as a backup login method.
Adding an email and password does not affect your existing journals or entries. Your data stays exactly where it is – you are simply adding another way to sign in to the same account. Once set up, you can use the email and password to sign in on any platform, including Android and the web at dayone.me.
When you sign in with an Apple ID, as Apple gives you the option to hide your email from us, instead giving us a Private Relay address. That email looks something like RandomNumbersAndLetters@privaterelay.appleid.com. This means it can be difficult to recover your account if you don’t know the private relay address, and easy to make a second account with your actual email address.
Currently, the Day One app on Apple devices does not support sign in with Google. Therefore, if you use sign in with Google to access your Day One account, you won’t be able to use this method to sign into your Day One account on your Apple devices as it is not supported on Apple. To sign in on an Apple device, you’ll need to add a password or Apple ID to your account.
To add an email or password to your Day One account, you’ll need to use either a web browser or an iOS device. This option isn’t available on Android or desktop (macOS or Windows) devices.
Note: You will not be able to add an email address to your account with these steps if that email is already associated with a Day One account.
Adding an Email Address in the Web App
To add an email address in the web app:
-
Click Continue with Apple or Continue with Google
-
Log in with your Apple ID or Google account. If the Day One account uses an old way of signing in with Apple ID, called Cloudkit, you may need to authenticate a second time after you see an error.
-
Once into https://dayone.me/settings you can add an email address and a password.
-
You will receive an email to confirm this. Click the link to confirm
Now you can use that email and password to sign in when you choose “Day One account” to sign in on the apps.
Adding an Email Address in the iOS app
To add an email address in the iOS app:
- In the Day One iOS app, sign in with Apple.
- On the top right corner, tap on the profile icon to open the Settings screen.
- Tap on your name to open the “Edit Account” screen.
- Under the “DAY ONE ACCOUNT INFORMATION” section, tap on the Email address. A new window will pop up where you can add an Email address.
-
You will receive an email to confirm this. Click the link to confirm
Please note: currently, the Day One iOS app does not have support for adding a new password within the app. To add a new password, please visit the web app per this guide.
Locked Out on iOS with Google Sign-In Only
If you signed up for Day One using Google and do not have an email/password set up, you cannot sign in on iPhone, iPad, or Mac because those platforms do not support Google sign-in. Follow these steps to regain access:
- Go to dayone.me in a web browser and sign in with Google. Verify that your entries are present.
- Sign out of the web app.
- On the dayone.me login page, tap “Continue with Email.”
- Enter the email address associated with your Google account.
- Tap “Forgot password?” to set a new password via email.
- On your iOS or Mac device, sign out of Day One if you are currently signed in.
- Sign back in using your email address and the new password you just created.
Important: Do not try to change your password from dayone.me/settings while signed in. That form requires your current password, which you do not have if you only use Google sign-in. You must sign out of the web app first and use the “Forgot password?” link on the login page instead.
