Optimize Device Storage

If you need more space on your device, this option allows you to optimize your device storage, reducing the storage space Day One requires. Before enabling Optimize Device Storage, please verify your data is synced by checking the web app. See here: How do I know if my data is synced?

You can reduce the storage space of Day One by doing the following:

iOS

Open Day One > Settings > Sync > Storage and choose either Optimize Device Storage or Download All Media. 

Please note that with the ‘Optimize device storage’ option enabled, full-resolution media may not be included in iCloud device backups. Only media that is stored locally.

 

After enabling “Optimize Device Storage”, you can clear local media storage by tapping Clear Local Media Storage. The data will still be stored on the server. Clear Local Media Storage is available in the iOS app only.

macOS

Open Day One > Settings (in the file menu) > Sync > and choose either Optimize Device Storage or Download All Media.

Android

If Day One is taking up too much space on your Android device, or your phone is running out of storage and you want to free up space, open Day One > Settings > Sync > and choose to either turn on or off Optimize Local Media Storage. It is turned off by default.

Turning on Optimize Local Media Storage reduces the amount of space Day One uses on your device. Your entries and media remain stored in the Day One Cloud, so nothing is deleted.

Note: Optimize Local Media Storage is the only local media storage setting on Android. There is no Clear Local Media Storage option in the Android app — that option exists in the iOS app only.

Note: You may also notice the Purge Local Backups option in Settings > Advanced. This is not the same as the Clear Local Media Storage option on iOS. The Purge Local Backups option clears the temporary zip files that are created locally during the auto-backup process to Google Drive. It doesn’t affect your actual journal entries or media.

Photos are optimized when imported to Day One for Basic and Silver users for a more efficient storage and sync. Silver or Gold users can now store higher-resolution photos. See here.
