Shared Journals Features Available by Platform

Here’s an overview of Shared Journals features currently available by platform.

Quick summary:

  • iOS, Android, Windows, and the web app at dayone.me support the full set of shared journal features: creating journals, inviting members, approving pending member requests, viewing and removing members, transferring ownership, commenting, reacting, and receiving notifications.
  • The Day One Mac app currently has a limited feature set. You can view shared journals, read and write entries, and drag entries into shared journals, but you cannot create shared journals, invite or approve members, view the member list, remove members, transfer ownership, comment, react, or receive shared-journal notifications from the Mac app. Use one of the other platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, or the web app) for those actions.

Features not available on the Day One Mac app

If you use Day One on Mac alongside your iPhone, Android phone, Windows PC, or the web app at dayone.me, here are the shared journal actions you will need to perform on one of those other platforms instead of the Mac app:

  • Creating a new shared journal
  • Joining a shared journal from an invitation
  • Inviting new participants (generating an invite link)
  • Approving or declining pending member requests (there is no Notifications tab on Mac for shared journal activity)
  • Viewing the list of members
  • Removing members from a shared journal
  • Transferring ownership of a shared journal
  • Leaving a shared journal
  • Adding comments or reactions to entries
  • Receiving in-app notifications for shared journal events

You can still use the Mac app to view shared journals in the sidebar, read entries from all members, write and edit your own entries, and drag entries from a private journal into a shared one. Member management and interactive features (comments, reactions, notifications) require one of the other platforms.

For step-by-step instructions on managing a shared journal, see the Shared Journals guide.
