Saved/Named locations

Named locations (also called Saved Places or custom place names) let you give a location your own name, like “Home” or “Office”. You can name, rename, and remove named locations in the Day One app on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and macOS.

How Saved Locations Work

When you manually assign a name to a location, Day One will apply that same name to all other entries with GPS coordinates that fall within a certain radius of that point.

The name belongs to the place, not to a single entry. That means renaming a location changes the name on every entry within that radius, including older entries, and removing the name brings back the original place name or address on those entries. If a place shows up under the wrong name (for example, you mislabeled your home location and now every entry from home shows that wrong name), rename it once using the steps below instead of editing each entry.

This is helpful because GPS data can have slight variations even when you’re in the same physical place. This feature automatically groups these slightly different coordinates under one consistent named location, helping to keep your map and location filters clean and organized.

However, if GPS coordinates for the same physical location are recorded far enough apart that they fall outside this automatic radius, they may appear as a separate, unnamed location. You can then name this new location as well to group entries around that specific point.

iOS

Name a location

Use the Filters menu. Tap the magnifying glass at the top of the screen > Places, tap a location, and choose Name this Location. Type a name and tap Save. Named locations are listed under My Places (or Saved Places).

You can also name a location from an entry: tap the entry’s location, then tap Add custom place name.

If you use Location History, you can also name a place from the day view: open a date from the Calendar, tap the Places card below the map, tap a visit, and choose Custom name.

Rename or correct a named location

To fix a wrong location name, tap the magnifying glass > Places, tap the named location, and choose Edit Location Name. Type the correct name and tap Save. The new name replaces the old one on every entry within the radius.

You can also rename it from an entry (tap the entry’s location, then Add custom place name, which opens with the current name filled in) or from the day view (tap the visit and choose Edit custom location name).

Remove a location name

Tap the magnifying glass > Places, tap the named location, and choose Delete Named Place. From the day view, tap the visit and choose Remove location name. This removes only the custom name; your entries keep their locations.

macOS

In an entry, click the location at the bottom and choose Name This Location. Type a name and click Save.

To rename or correct a named location, click the location at the bottom of any entry from that place and choose Edit Location Name. Type the correct name and click Save, or click Remove name to remove the custom name.

Android

The Android app doesn’t currently have an option to name, rename, or remove a named location. To change a location’s name, use the Day One app on iOS (iPhone or iPad) or macOS. Editing an entry’s location on Android (tap the map, then Location > Attach location) picks a different place for that one entry; it doesn’t rename a named location. See Editing an Entry’s Location. Named locations also don’t currently appear in the Android app, so Android entries show the original place name or address rather than your custom name. The same is true for entries in the Day One web and Windows apps.
