How to Search for words and phrases in Day One for iOS and macOS

All our apps have a search function, though the specifics vary by platform. If you have trouble finding an entry, try checking that you’re searching the correct Journal or tap All Entries before searching.

Web

Our web app has our most advanced search and filtering options for entries. Click the magnifying glass above the list of entries for a Journal.

Available filters in the web app

You can filter by the following:

  • Location
  • Daily Prompts
  • Templates
  • Weather
  • Activity
  • Creation Device
  • Music
  • Checklists
  • Favorites

You can also select multiple filters to better fine-tune your search.

iOS

How to Search in the iOS app

Tap the Search icon at the top of the list view to begin a search. 

Type the search criteria and entries will begin to appear. The search defaults to All Entries, but users can switch to specific journals once the word or phrase is searched. 

How to rebuild the index in the iOS app

If the search seems to not return the expected results, please try rebuilding the index. Please note: rebuilding index is currently only available on iOS.

To rebuild the index in Day One on your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Day One app.
  2. Navigate to Settings by clicking on your profile picture in the top right corner.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Under the Search section, click Rebuild Index.


After rebuilding, please try to search again to see if this helps.

MacOS

How to search in macOS desktop app

Click the Search icon at the top or use Command-Shift-F to search all data in Day One.

Or within an entry, use Command-F to search for words in an entry.

Troubleshooting Search Issues on MacOS

Currently, macOS does not support rebuilding the search index in-app. However, you can manually reset the index by following the instructions below:

  1. Quit Day One Mac
  2. Paste the following file path in Go to Folder in Finder: ~/Library/Group Containers/5U8NS4GX82.dayoneapp2/Data/Documents/indexes/fts.db  (See screenshot below)
  3. Drag that file to the trash
  4. Re-launch Day One. 
  5. See if the search ability has returned.

Android

How to search and filter in the Android app

Tap the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the app. From here, you can type your query to find the desired entries. There are also filters available to sort by Favorites, Tags, and Places.
