Reminders

Instructions on how to use Reminders in Day One for iOS, macOS, and Android.

Learn how Day One’s Reminders can help you make a habit of journaling. Reminders do not currently sync between devices. Each device will need to set up reminders individually.

iOS

There are three reminder types for Day One iOS.

  • Daily Reminder
  • Custom Reminders
  • Text Messaging (available in Premium subscription, USA only)

Daily Reminder

To enable the Daily Reminder, go to Day One > Settings > Reminders > Notifications > Daily Reminder.

Once Daily Reminder is turned on, specifics can be adjusted in the Details section, including the time of the reminder (exact time, or a random time within a specified range), the journal to which the entry will be posted, and optional tags.

Custom Reminders

In addition to the standard Daily Reminder, additional custom reminders can be set up by tapping New Reminder. You can have a custom message appear, choose the time, recurrence, to which journal the entry will post, tags, and templates. Please note that currently, yearly reminders are not an option.

When the reminder appears in your notifications, tap on it to load the entry.

Templates are loaded into the entry when you tap the reminder as it appears or tap the reminder in the Notification Screen on iOS.

Text Messaging

Starting in version 6.0, Premium subscribers can set up Text Messaging reminders. This is currently available in USA and Canada. When the text is received, simply reply in Messages to create a new Day One entry. Additional details are found in our Text Messaging to Day One help guide.

Android

There are four reminder types for Day One Android.

  • Daily Reminder
  • On This Day
  • Custom Reminders
  • Text Messaging (available in Premium subscription, USA only)

Daily Reminder

To enable the Daily Reminder, go to Settings > Reminders & Notifications > Daily Reminder, and turn on the System Notification to receive a random daily reminder to write in Day One.

You can select a timeframe in the Time section, and your daily reminder will be sent at a random time between those hours.

On This Day

The On This Day notification can be enabled in the same way as the Daily Reminder, and will notify you of any entries on this day in the past, helping you revisit and relive your memories.

Custom Reminders

In addition to the default daily reminders, additional custom reminders can be set up by tapping Add Reminder.

You can have a custom message appear, choose the time, recurrence, to which journal the entry will post, tags, and template. Please note that currently, yearly reminders are not an option.

When the reminder appears in your notifications, tap on it to load the entry.

Text Messaging

Starting in version 6.0, Premium subscribers can set up Text Messaging reminders. This is currently available in USA and Canada. When the text is received, simply reply to create a new Day One entry. Additional details are found in our Text Messaging to Day One help guide.

macOS

Click Day One > Settings (in the file menu) > Reminders. Click to enable reminders and then click the + icon to create a new reminder. Settings can be adjusted for when the reminder is received, to which journal the entry will be added, and even templates.

Reminders will appear in the Menu Bar Entry option at the specified time. Please note the computer will need to be on at the time of the reminder.
