Editing Journals

How to edit a journal in Day One on iOS, macOS, and Android

You can edit aspects of any of your journals in Day One, including the default Journal. The All Entries list of entries can not be further customized and will show all entries and the default journal color.

iOS

Accessing Journal Settings

There are two methods to access Journal settings in the app. You can tap the Journals tab at the bottom of the app, then long-press on the desired Journal.

Alternatively:

  1. Tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner
  2. Tap Journals

Reordering Journals

To reorder your journals in the iOS app:

  1. Tap the profile icon > Journals.
  2. Use the sliders on the right of the journal names to rearrange the order of journals.

Editing Journals

To edit journals, from the profile icon > Journals, tap the journal you wish to edit.

After tapping one of the journals, see options to edit the journal name, description, color, and advanced settings.

Advanced Settings

In the Advanced settings, there are several options to tailor the journal:

  • Journal ID (used for customer support issues)

Hiding options – These toggles control where entries from this journal appear throughout the app. If a toggle is turned off, entries in this journal will be excluded from that area:

  • Show in All Entries – Show or hide this journal’s entries in the All Entries view (and the Calendar view, which reads from All Entries).
  • Show in On This Day – Show or hide this journal’s entries in On This Day.
  • Show in Calendar Day View (formerly Show in Today View) – Show or hide this journal’s entries in the day view that opens when you tap a day on the Calendar tab.

FAQ

Can I edit the All Entries area of the app?

All Entries list of entries can not be further customized and will show all entries and the default journal color.

Can I add a background image to a Journal?

A journal’s cover photo or background image can not be set for viewing in the app; setting the journal’s cover photo for book printing is a separate process. At this time, only a custom color can be set for journal titles. This custom color will not affect the color of the text in journal entries.

Can I add a word count to a Journal?

At this time you can only view a word count for an entry, not a Journal.

Why don’t I see an entry in the Calendar view, On This Day, or All Entries?

Each journal has per-journal Hiding options that control where its entries appear. If an entry is missing from the Calendar view, On This Day, or All Entries, check the journal’s Hiding options:

  1. Open Day One and tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner (on macOS: Day One menu > Settings).
  2. Tap Journals and open the journal the entry belongs to.
  3. Tap Advanced and scroll to Hiding options.

Make sure these toggles are enabled:

  • Show in All Entries – If off, the journal’s entries are hidden from the All Entries view and the Calendar view (which reads from All Entries).
  • Show in On This Day – If off, the journal’s entries won’t appear in the On This Day view.

These settings are per-journal and sync across your Day One apps, so changes on one device will apply everywhere.

Why does the Calendar view show some days as empty even though I have entries on those days?

There is no separate “Show in Calendar” toggle in Day One. The Calendar view reads from the All Entries view, so if a journal has Show in All Entries turned off, its entries won’t appear in the Calendar either — the dates will look empty even though entries exist in that journal.

To fix it: tap the profile icon (upper-right) > Journals > tap the journal > Advanced > Hiding options, and enable Show in All Entries. The journal’s entries will then appear in both the All Entries view and the Calendar view.
