What happens if my Silver or Gold subscription expires or is canceled?
This article describes what happens if your subscription expires or if you choose not to renew.
We appreciate your support in subscribing to Day One Silver or Gold. Subscribing helps us continue to support Day One for years to come. We understand there are circumstances in which you may not wish to continue subscribing at a certain time.
Be assured that your data remains yours forever. You will always be able to access your entries, regardless of subscription. Your entries are never deleted or purged when your subscription expires — this includes both entries stored locally on your device and entries synced to the cloud. See here for backup options available without needing Silver or Gold.
If your subscription expires, and you do not renew, your account status will be set to the tier you had before subscribing. You will be limited to the features available in that tier. Please see the Pricing and Features Guide for details about the features included in each tier.
What happens to photos, videos, audio, and PDFs already in my entries?
Media you have already added stays in your entries and remains fully viewable and playable on any tier. This includes audio recordings, videos, PDFs and scanned documents, drawings, and photos beyond your tier’s per-entry limit. Viewing an entry, playing back an audio recording, watching a video, or opening a PDF is not a subscription feature, so moving to a lower tier does not remove, lock, or hide anything you have already saved.
What changes is what you can add going forward. On a lower tier you will not be able to record or attach new audio, add new videos, attach new PDFs, or add more photos per entry than that tier allows. Your existing entries are unaffected.
Apple Subscriptions: Disabling Auto-Renew
On Apple devices, disabling auto-renew for your Day One subscription is treated the same as canceling it. If you disable auto-renew and then re-enable it later, Apple may renew your subscription at the current price rather than the price you originally subscribed at.
This means if you are on a legacy or promotional price, disabling auto-renew – even temporarily – can result in losing that price. Apple controls subscription pricing and renewal terms, and Day One cannot override or restore a previous price once it has changed.
