Creating entries in Day One for iOS

How to create entries in Day One for iOS

There are many ways to create entries in Day One. The screenshots are mostly from iPhone, but they apply to the iPad as well.

Please note that saving an empty entry in your journal is not possible. This is by design and the expected behavior of Day One.

  • Tap the + icon at the bottom of the screen to start a new entry. Media icons are displayed when the entry is first opened. Tap these to add media or start typing and they will hide. Media can be added later in a blank entry. See here.
  • When you are in the Calendar view, tap a date to open the Today view for a variety of options to create new entries. Today replaces the Activity Feed view. Long press a date in the Calendar for a menu.
  • Long press a location in the Map view to create a new entry at a specific location

Quick Start

Starting in iOS version 2025.13, the More tab just got more useful. With the new Quick Start section, you can jump straight into journaling with four of your favorite actions—like Suggestions, Today, Templates, or Audio. Whether you need a prompt, record a voice note, or want to capture something happening right now, Quick Start gets you there faster.

To add a new entry go to More > Quick Start. Select Suggestions, Today, Templates, Audio, or tap “See more” to view more Quick Start actions. Rearrange the order of Quick Start items to personalize your journaling experience by tapping “Edit”, then tap the handle and drag the item to the desired spot. Tap “Done” to save the changes.
