Daily Chat

Requires Day One Gold. Daily Chat is available with a Day One Gold subscription.

How to Get Started

What You Can Do

Resume a Chat & Update Your Entry

Your chat stays open all day. Come back anytime — tap Resume Chat from the Today tab to keep going. If you’ve already generated an entry, tap Update Entry to add your new messages to it.

Chat About Past Days

Use the date navigation in the Today tab to access chats from previous days. You can resume an old conversation or generate an entry from it at any time.

Voice Mode

Prefer to talk? Tap the microphone icon to switch to Voice Mode and have a spoken conversation. Daily Chat will listen and respond out loud. You can still generate a written entry from the conversation when you’re done.

Memories

Over time, Daily Chat builds a memory of things you’ve shared — your routines, relationships, and recurring themes — making conversations feel more personal. Memories are stored privately in your account.

Personalize with a Bio

Add a short bio to make conversations more relevant to you. Go to Settings > Daily Chat > Bio and add your name and a description. This is optional and you can update it anytime.

Privacy & Security

Daily Chat sends your messages to our AI provider to generate responses. Your content is never stored or used to train AI models. Your chat messages and memories are stored encrypted in your Day One account — the same encryption that protects your journal entries.

Memories you’ve built up are included as context in conversations to personalize responses, but are stored privately in your account and never shared externally. You can view or delete your memories at any time from Settings > Daily Chat > Memories.

You can disable AI features at any time from Settings > AI Features. For full details, see AI Features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to set anything up to use Daily Chat?

No setup required. If you’re on Day One Gold (version 2026.7 or later), the Today tab appears automatically. Just tap it and accept the privacy notice on your first use.

I was using Daily Chat in Labs. What changed?

Daily Chat has graduated from Day One Labs and is now a standard Day One Gold feature. If you were previously on a Premium plan (now called Silver), you’ll need to upgrade to Gold to continue using it.

What platforms is Daily Chat available on?

Daily Chat is available on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Day One on the web (desktop and mobile browsers). Mac support is coming soon.

Where are my Daily Chat entries saved?

On your first entry, you can choose to create a dedicated “Daily” journal or save to an existing one. You can change this anytime from Chat Settings within Daily Chat.

What happens to my previous Daily Chat conversations?

All your past chats are preserved. Access them using the date navigation in the Today tab.

How is my privacy protected?

Only the content you actively send is processed — temporarily, and only to generate a response. Your data is never stored externally or used for AI training. End-to-end encrypted journals stay encrypted. You can disable AI features at any time from Settings > AI Features.

Daily Chat is showing an “Enter Encryption Key” button, but my journals aren’t end-to-end encrypted. Why?

Daily Chat requires an encryption key to protect your chat content and memories. This is separate from the end-to-end encryption setting on individual journals — so even if E2E encryption is disabled for your journals, Daily Chat still needs your account’s encryption key.

To find your key, check these locations:

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings (profile icon) > Sync > Encryption Key
  • Android: Settings (profile icon) > Sync > Encryption Key
  • Mac: Settings > Sync > Advanced > View Encryption Key
  • Web: Settings (gear icon, top left) > Account > Encryption Key

If you can’t find your key on any device, see Finding a Lost Encryption Key or contact our support team.
