Adding Tables in Day One

In Day One, you can add tables to an entry in two ways: as a Markdown Table, or a regular Table (supported on the web app only).

Adding a Markdown Table

Markdown tables are supported across platforms. Please see this guide on adding a markdown table via a code block.

Adding a non-markdown Table (Web app only)

The latest version of Day One for the web supports inserting tables directly into your journal entries using the editor toolbar. This update brings a simpler, more visual way to create and edit tables in the Day One web editor.

We’ve focused on adding and editing tables in Day One for the web first, where the larger screen and keyboard make table creation a smoother, more natural experience. Full support for adding and editing tables will be coming for iOS and Android in the future.

With just a few clicks, you can:

  • Insert a table with your chosen number of rows and columns.
  • Edit tables after creation, adding or removing rows and columns, or deleting the table altogether.
  • Format information in a structured, easy-to-reference format without needing to remember Markdown syntax.

To add a table:

  1. In the editor toolbar, click the new Table (grid) icon. You can also use the slash command /table.
  1. Choose your table size by selecting the number of columns and rows, then Create Table.
  1. Edit the table structure any time. Place your cursor in the table, click the Table icon again to add or delete rows or columns or delete the table.
  1. Day One will sync as usual, so your table appears across all your devices. For now, on Mac, iOS, and Android, tables created on Day One for the web will appear as read-only – you can view any tables you’ve created or synced, and you can still add text or images around them like in a regular entry. If you’d like to keep writing tables directly on those platforms, you can still add and edit Markdown tables in your entries.

Tips and Limitations for Tables (Web app)

Here are answers to common questions about working with non-Markdown tables in the Day One web editor.

Why doesn’t my table fill the full page width? (table looks narrow, table too small, table only fills middle of page)

Tables in the web editor are sized to match the entry’s readable content width, the same width as the text in your entry. They don’t expand to the full width of the browser window. On a wide screen, you’ll see space on either side of the table, just like you do for paragraphs. This is intentional and helps keep entries readable across different window sizes.

Can I adjust column widths? (resize columns, make a column wider, change column width)

Column widths in the web editor are distributed evenly across the table and can’t currently be resized manually. You can change the structure of the table by adding or removing rows and columns using the Table icon in the toolbar. Cells will wrap longer text automatically.

Pasting a Markdown Table on Mac or iOS

Starting in Day One 2026.4, if you paste a Markdown-formatted table into an entry on Mac or iOS, Day One will correctly save it in your entry. A few things to keep in mind:

  • The pasted table will not be editable on Mac or iOS – this isn’t full table editing support yet.
  • The table will be editable in the Day One web editor.
  • You can still add text or images around the table on Mac and iOS like a regular entry.
