Getting crash logs from Day One for macOS

How to obtain crash logs for Day One from your Mac

Some issues are hard for us to resolve without seeing some more macOS system details and diagnostic reports. Please share the following with us if your app is crashing, freezing, hanging, stuck, or moving slowly. These will help us diagnose those performance issues for you. If Day One is freezing or hanging (not crashing), skip to the Activity Monitor Logs section below – crash logs won’t be generated for hangs and freezes.

Steps to Gather Crash Reports

  1. Open Finder

  2. Select Go to Folder… from the Go menu

  3. Enter: ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

  4. In the resulting list select everything that starts with “Day One”

  5. Attach each of these crash reports to the support request

If there are a lot of files, please compress them by following these steps:

  1. Select all the “Day One” crash reports (use the CMD key to select multiple files in Finder).

  2. Select Compress X Items (where X is the amount of items selected) from the File menu to create a file called Archive.zip.

  3. Attach Archive.zip to the support request.

Console Logs

We may also ask for logs from Console, a utility that tracks diagnostic information.

Console is found in the Utilities folder, located in your Mac’s Applications folder. You can also launch Console by using Spotlight.

Steps to Export Logs from Console

  1. Launch Console.

  2. If a Start Streaming button appears in the toolbar, click it to begin capturing new log entries in real time.

  3. In the search field at the top of the Console window, type Day One to filter the log to show only Day One messages.

  4. Reproduce the issue — for example, try to open Day One and allow it to freeze.

  5. Select all the log entries shown using Edit > Select All (Command+A), copy them (Command+C), and paste them into a new TextEdit document. Save it as a plain text (.txt) file.

  6. Send this file to us as an attachment to your support request.

Activity Monitor Logs

Activity Monitor logs are especially useful when Day One is freezing, hanging, or showing the spinning beach ball – situations where crash logs won’t be generated. They can also help diagnose slowdowns or the app closing unexpectedly.

Steps to export logs from Activity Monitor

  1. While Day One is having issues (e.g., freezing, spinning beach ball, or running slowly), open Activity Monitor
  2. Search for Day One, select the main Day One process with the standard blue & white icon, then go to View > Sample Process. This will record everything the app is doing for several seconds, showing where the app may be stuck.
  3. Save this as a text file and send it to support.
