How to delete a Day One Sync account
These are the steps to delete a Day One account.
You can delete your Day One Sync account yourself from the web app, iOS, macOS, or Android. Deletion is not immediate: the process takes about 5 days to complete, and you can cancel it at any time during that window.
Before You Delete
- You have a 5-day grace period. Once begun, the account deletion process takes ~5 days to avoid accidental deletion. During the 5-day grace period, you can cancel the deletion using the recovery link in the email you receive, or by contacting support.
- You will receive a recovery email. After you close the account you will get an email titled “Your Day One account has been closed”. This email contains a link you can use to recover the account if you change your mind within 5 days of initially closing the account.
- Export your entries first. Deleting your account removes all entries from Day One on every device, and local data is not preserved. On iOS or Android, go to Settings > Import/Export > Export Day One JSON. On Mac, go to File > Export > JSON. Save the export file to a safe location outside of Day One, such as iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
Web App
Sign in to the Day One Web app at https://dayone.me/settings with the account you wish to delete.
There is an option to sign in with Apple ID or click Sign In with E-Mail or Google.

Once signed in, scroll down in the Settings to Delete Account.

iOS App
- Tap your profile picture on the top right corner to open Settings.
- At the top of the Settings screen, tap your profile picture or name again to open your Account details.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced.
- Tap Delete Account.
- Confirm the deletion of your account.
Note: There are two Advanced sections in Day One for iOS. The Delete Account option is inside Account details (step 2 above), not in the main Settings Advanced section.
Note: if you see an Error: forbidden message when attempting to delete your account, it’s likely that the access token saved on your device has been removed. In this case, please try deleting your account through the Web App instead.
macOS App
- Open Settings from the bottom of the left sidebar or from the menubar: Day One > Settings…
- Click Sync (next to General)
- Click the Account Details button
- It will open the Day One Web App https://dayone.me/ in a web browser
- Follow the steps to delete your account from the Web App section above
Android App
- Tap your profile picture on the top right corner to open Settings.
- Tap Account to open the Account Info page.
- Tap Delete Account
- Confirm the deletion of your account.
After Permanent Deletion
Your account is not fully deleted until the 5-day grace period ends. After the 5-day grace period, account data — including all journal entries and media — is permanently deleted from Day One’s servers and cannot be recovered. Be sure to export your entries (see Before You Delete above) before the grace period ends if you want to keep a copy.
If you need to create a new account using the same email address, contact Day One Support at support@dayoneapp.com. The email address may not be immediately available for re-registration after deletion.
