Known Issues

Known issues in Day One apps on iOS, macOS, Android, Web, and Windows.

This is not a comprehensive list of known issues in Day One, but some common issues. If you have something to report, please contact support.

Running an Outdated Version of Day One

  • Issue: Day One uses year-based version numbering (e.g., 2025.x, 2026.x). If your version number is a single or double digit (such as 7.x, 8.x, or 10.x), your app is significantly outdated and is no longer supported.
  • Status: Update required.
  • Fix: Update Day One to the latest version from the Mac App Store, iOS App Store, Google Play Store, or Microsoft Store. Many bugs, crashes, and missing features in older versions have already been resolved. See System Requirements for Day One for details.

Day One Sync

If you’re experiencing any sync errors, please refer to our Day One Sync Status page.

Day One for Windows and Web

Location data from mobile apps is being removed when editing an entry on the Web or Windows app
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: Re-add the location via the mobile apps
Location and Weather data are not automatically added on the Windows desktop app
  • Status: Fixed in Day One Windows 1.0.4
  • Workaround: Use the Web app on the desktop instead: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/day-one-on-the-web/auto-add-location-and-weather-to-entries/

Day One for macOS

Mac App Freezing or Becoming Unresponsive
  • Issue: Some users on macOS may experience the Day One app freezing or becoming unresponsive (app hanging, not responding, spinning wheel, needs force quit). The app may need to be force-quit and reopened to temporarily restore functionality. This issue was observed in Day One version 2026.5.1.
  • Status: Fixed in Day One 2026.6. Please update to the latest version in the App Store.
  • Workaround: Force-quit Day One (right-click the Day One icon in the Dock and select Force Quit, or use Command+Option+Escape) and reopen the app.

Photo Rearranging Not Working on macOS
  • Issue: Dragging photos to rearrange their order within an entry on macOS is not working correctly. The blue drop indicator appears when dragging, but the photo does not move to the new position (photos not reordering, can’t rearrange images, drag and drop images not moving).
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: Remove the photos from the entry and re-add them in the desired order.

PDF Previews Appearing Blank
  • Issue: In Day One version 2026.5, PDF previews may appear blank or only display the entry header without any entry content. This affects the “View PDF” feature. Photos, text, and other entry content are not rendered in the generated PDF.
  • Status: Fixed. A fix has been implemented and will be available in 2026.5.1 – Please update to the latest release in the App Store.
Daily Prompt Widget (Small and Medium sizes) Not Working

Issue: Clicking the small or medium Daily Prompt widget on macOS opens the last viewed entry or the journal summary view instead of creating a new entry with the daily prompt.

Status: Reported to the engineering team.

Workaround: Use the large Daily Prompt widget, which works correctly. Alternatively, access the Daily Prompt from within the app via More in the left sidebar.

Same entry stuck showing when opening app

Duplicate Tags

  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.

Converting Journals to End-to-End Encryption
  • Status: Standard encrypted Journals cannot be converted to End-to-End Encryption
  • Workaround: Create a new journal with End-to-End Encryption enabled. Once created, move those entries from the standard encrypted journal to the newly created End-to-End Encrypted journal.
Formatted text from Apple Notes loses formatting when pasted
  • Issue: When copying formatted text (bold, italic, etc.) from the Apple Notes app on macOS and pasting it into Day One, the formatting is not preserved. The text is pasted as plain, unformatted text.
  • Status: Known limitation.
  • Workaround: Use the Day One web app at https://dayone.me instead – copying and pasting formatted text from Notes into the web app preserves formatting. Alternatively, re-apply formatting manually in Day One using the Aa formatting menu or keyboard shortcuts (Command+B for bold, Command+I for italic).

Day One for iOS

iOS App Performance Lag (Slow Typing, Unresponsive UI)
  • Issue: Some users on iOS are experiencing severe performance lag in Day One, particularly when typing (slow text input, delayed keystrokes, app becoming unresponsive). The app may also lag when navigating between entries or switching from other apps. In some cases the device may heat up while Day One is open. This issue began with version 2026.5 and persists in 2026.5.1 and 2026.6.
  • Status: Fix will be available in version 2026.6.1 – please update once that’s available in the App Store, and contact support if the issues persist after updating.
  • Workarounds:
    • Some users have reported that disabling WiFi (or enabling Airplane mode) while writing an entry eliminates the lagging issue.
    • Force-quitting and reopening the app may temporarily improve performance.
    • Starting a new journal may improve performance (you can move entries back to the original journal once the issue is fixed).
PDF Previews Appearing Blank
  • Issue: In Day One version 2026.5, PDF previews may appear blank or only display the entry header without any entry content. This affects the “View PDF” feature as well as Book Printing PDF previews. Photos, text, and other entry content are not rendered in the generated PDF.
  • Status: Fixed. A fix has been implemented and will be available in 2026.5.1 – Please update to the latest release in the App Store.
  • Workaround: None at this time.
In-app Camera Defaults to Zoomed out view
  • Issue: When taking a picture using the in-app camera in the Day One iOS app (v.2025.25.1), the camera setting is stuck at the zoomed-out view.
  • Status: Fixed in 2026.2.
Screenshots Shared Directly to Day One Don’t Appear
  • Issue: When you take a screenshot on your iOS 26 device and use the Share option to send it directly to Day One, a new entry is created, but the screenshot is not included in the entry.
  • Status: Fixed in 2026.1
  • Workaround: Save the screenshot to your device first, then open Day One and create a new entry, and add the screenshot directly in the app instead.
Blank ‘On This Day’ Widget
  • Issue: The ‘On This Day’ widget is blank, it just displays a black or blue background with no content.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: None at this time.
App Stuck Updating or Downloading (Greyed Out Icon)
  • Issue: When trying to update Day One in the App Store, the update becomes stuck while updating. The app icon on the home screen may appear greyed out, dimmed, or show a loading indicator. This can also happen after an iOS or iPadOS update triggers a re-download of the app. This is a known issue on Apple’s end.
  • Status: Unknown as it needs to be resolved by Apple.
  • Workaround: Long-press the Day One app icon on your home screen and tap Cancel Download. Then open the App Store and re-download Day One. Your journal data is safely stored on our servers, so nothing will be lost. For additional steps, see Apple’s troubleshooting guide: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102632
Apple Shortcuts tags are not applied (iPhone)
  • Issue: When using the Apple Shortcuts “Create Entry” action with Day One on an iPhone, the Tags field may clear itself while you type or after you insert a variable. When the shortcut runs, the entry is created but the tags are not added.
  • Status: We are aware of the issue and are monitoring it. This appears to be related to how iOS Shortcuts handles the Tags input field, so there is not currently a reliable fix we can provide within Day One.
  • Workaround:
    • Create the entry without tags, then add tags in Day One after the entry is created.
    • If you have access to an iPad, try adding tags there instead.

Day One for Android

Password Reset Not Working on Android
  • Issue: The “Forgot Password” flow on the Android app is not working when accessed from the sign-in screen. Users see a “Something went wrong. Please contact support” error when attempting to reset their password (unable to reset password, password reset error, forgot password not working). This affects all account types, not just Google Sign-In accounts.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: Reset your password using the Day One website at dayone.me or the iOS app instead.
Auto-correct issue
  • Issue: The autocorrect feature on the Samsung keyboard is not working.
  • Status: Reported to developers for investigation.
  • Workaround: Use a different keyboard like Gboard or Swiftkey.

Day One Classic (Version 1.0) [Obsolete]

There are several known issues with Day One Classic (version 1) when using the latest OS versions (iOS 11 & macOS 10.13 or later). Day One Classic is no longer supported. We strongly encourage you to upgrade using these instructions: Upgrading from Day One Classic. Please see this guide: Day One Classic is retired.

Cross-platform Compatibility Errors (“Editing Unavailable”)

We’re continuing to add more features, and some may not yet be available on every platform. When you create an entry on one platform using such feature, and open it on another platform where that feature is not yet available, you may get an error message like this:

Editing Unavailable

This entry can’t be edited with this version of Day One as it was created or edited on a newer version of the app or on iOS and contains features unsupported by the current app version.

To edit the entry with an error like the above, please do so on the device where it was originally created.

If you’d like to know which specific feature isn’t supported on your platform, feel free to contact our support team at dayoneapp.com/contact/.
