Known Issues

Known issues in Day One apps on iOS, macOS, Android, Web, and Windows.

This is not a comprehensive list of known issues in Day One, but some common issues. If you have something to report, please contact support.

Running an Outdated Version of Day One

  • Issue: Day One uses year-based version numbering (e.g., 2025.x, 2026.x). If your version number is a single or double digit (such as 7.x, 8.x, or 10.x), your app is significantly outdated and is no longer supported.
  • Status: Update required.
  • Fix: Update Day One to the latest version from the Mac App Store, iOS App Store, Google Play Store, or Microsoft Store. Many bugs, crashes, and missing features in older versions have already been resolved. See System Requirements for Day One for details.

Day One Sync

If you’re experiencing any sync errors, please refer to our Day One Sync Status page.

Daily Chat

Daily Chat Voice Mode “Connection Lost”
  • Issue: Some users may see a “Connection Lost” or “connection failed” error immediately when tapping the microphone to start Voice Mode in Daily Chat (voice mode not working, voice chat won’t connect, connection lost on voice button, AI voice mode error, voice mode lost). This affects Day One on iOS and Android. The typed side of Daily Chat is not affected, and the error appears even on a stable network and after reinstalling the app.
  • Status: Resolved. Updated versions of the iOS and Android apps are now available in the App Store (version 2026.11.1 or later) and Google Play (version 2026.11.2 or later). The web app fix is already live at dayone.me. Update Day One to the latest version and Voice Mode will start working again.
  • Workaround: If you can’t update right away:
    • Use the typed input in Daily Chat. Tap into the text field instead of the microphone and continue your conversation that way.
    • Use Day One on the web at dayone.me, where the fix is already live.

Day One for Windows and Web

Daily Chat Sync Error or Crash on Web and Windows (“No active content key fingerprint found”, “Content key fetch failed”)
  • Issue: Starting in March 2026, some users on the Day One web app and Windows app began seeing a persistent sync error related to Daily Chat, or a crash when opening their journal. Mobile apps are not affected. You may see this even if you have never used Daily Chat (Daily Chat sync error, Daily Chat failing to sync, sync error for a feature I don’t use, never used Daily Chat but seeing sync errors), because residual Daily Chat records from when the feature was in Day One Labs can still trigger the sync attempt. Common error messages and symptoms include:
    • “No active content key fingerprint found” in the sync details, with type Daily Chat
    • “FAILED Content key fetch” and/or “FAILED Daily chat” entries listed under “Issues requiring attention” in Sync Details
    • “Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘map’)” when opening your journal on the web or Windows app
    • The sync indicator showing a failed Daily Chat update, even though all journals and entries finish downloading
  • Status: Resolved server-side. Your journal data is not at risk — this affects only the Daily Chat sync record, not your entries. To clear the error on your client, follow the steps below.
  • Fix:
    • Web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Safari): Perform a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac). If the error persists, clear your browser cookies for dayone.me and reload. As a last resort, sign out via the gear icon (top left of the sidebar) > Account > Sign Out, then sign back in.
    • Windows desktop app: Sign out and sign back in. Open Settings (⚙️) and select Log Out. Then sign back in.
  • You do not need to manually delete the entry. The orphaned Daily Chat record will resolve itself once your client picks up the server-side fix.

Day One for macOS

Copy To and Move To Not Working on Mac
  • Issue: Some users on macOS found that copying or moving an entry to another journal did not work in Day One for Mac (versions 2026.11 and 2026.12). Choosing Edit > Copy To and selecting a journal closed the picker but did nothing — no copy was created and no error appeared (copy to does nothing, can’t copy entry to another journal, copy to not working). Choosing Edit > Move To caused the app to crash immediately (move to crashes the app, Day One crashes when moving an entry, app quits when moving to another journal).
  • Status: Resolved. Day One 2026.13, now available in the Mac App Store, fixes both Copy To and Move To. Update Day One to the latest version and both actions will work normally again.
  • Workaround: If you haven’t updated yet:
    • To move an entry to another journal on Mac, drag and drop it instead: click and hold the entry’s text (not its date) in the entry list, then drag it onto the destination journal in the sidebar.
    • To copy an entry, or if dragging does not work, use Day One on your iPhone, iPad, or the web app at dayone.me to copy or move the entry, then let it sync.

Preferences Window Closes Automatically on Mac
  • Issue: Some users on macOS may notice that the Day One Preferences window (⌘,) closes on its own within a few seconds of opening, without any user interaction (settings window closes by itself, preferences disappear, preferences window keeps closing). This can happen on any pane. If you are editing a template in Preferences when the window closes, the app may freeze and require a force quit (Day One frozen after settings close, app not responding after preferences disappear, need to force quit Day One).
  • Status: A fix is included in Day One 2026.12, coming soon to the App Store.
  • Workaround:
    • To avoid the freeze, use Day One on the web at dayone.me to manage templates in the meantime.
    • If the Mac app freezes, press Command+Option+Escape, select Day One, and click Force Quit. Then reopen the app.

Daily Prompt Widget (Small and Medium sizes) Not Working
  • Issue: Clicking the small or medium Daily Prompt widget on macOS opens the last viewed entry or the journal summary view instead of creating a new entry with the daily prompt.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team.
  • Workaround: Use the large Daily Prompt widget, which works correctly. Alternatively, access the Daily Prompt from within the app via More in the left sidebar.

Same entry stuck showing when opening app
Converting Journals to End-to-End Encryption
  • Status: Standard encrypted Journals cannot be converted to End-to-End Encryption
  • Workaround: Create a new journal with End-to-End Encryption enabled. Once created, move those entries from the standard encrypted journal to the newly created End-to-End Encrypted journal.
Formatted text from Apple Notes loses formatting when pasted
  • Issue: When copying formatted text (bold, italic, etc.) from the Apple Notes app on macOS and pasting it into Day One, the formatting is not preserved. The text is pasted as plain, unformatted text.
  • Status: Known limitation.
  • Workaround: Use the Day One web app at https://dayone.me instead – copying and pasting formatted text from Notes into the web app preserves formatting. Alternatively, re-apply formatting manually in Day One using the Aa formatting menu or keyboard shortcuts (Command+B for bold, Command+I for italic).
Pasting from Microsoft Word may appear as an image instead of text
  • Issue: When copying formatted text from Microsoft Word for macOS and pasting it into Day One (the Mac app, or Day One Web in a Mac browser), the text may be inserted as an image instead of editable text (Word paste shows as image, Word text becomes picture, can’t edit pasted Word text, Word copy paste turns into image, paste from Word not working). This does not affect Microsoft Word for iOS or iPadOS — pasting from Word on an iPad works as expected.
  • Status: Known limitation. Microsoft Word for macOS places multiple representations of the copied content on the system clipboard, and Day One sometimes picks up the image representation rather than the text.
  • Workaround: Use Paste as Plain Text instead of a regular paste:
    • Day One Mac app: Use the menu Edit > Paste as Plain Text, or the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + V. This pastes editable text without the original Word formatting.
    • Day One Web (dayone.me): Use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + V (your browser’s Paste and Match Style) to paste editable text.
    • As an alternative, paste the Word content into a plain text editor first (for example, TextEdit in plain text mode, or Notes), then copy from there and paste into Day One.

Note: None of these workarounds preserve Word’s original rich text formatting (bold, headings, tables, etc.). All options result in plain, unformatted text — any styling will need to be re-applied manually in Day One. There is currently no way to paste from Word on macOS and keep the formatting intact.

Day One for iOS

Entry Previews Showing Raw Markdown
  • Issue: Some users on iOS or Mac may see raw markdown text in entry previews on the List or timeline view, instead of the formatted content. Examples include **bold** or other formatting characters showing as plain text, or media references like dayone-moment://video/..., dayone-moment://photo/..., or dayone-moment:/genericMedia/... appearing in place of an embedded photo, video, or generated suggestion preview (raw markdown showing in list view, dayone-moment text in entry list, asterisks showing instead of bold, formatting characters in timeline, video link instead of preview). The affected entries themselves still display correctly when opened – this is a preview rendering issue only, and the underlying entry content and media are not lost.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: Tap or open the affected entry to view the correctly formatted content. Do not edit the entry to delete the placeholder text – the dayone-moment:// lines are references to your actual media files, and removing them would detach the media from the entry.

Search Icon Missing on iOS
  • Issue: Some users on iOS may notice the search icon is missing from the app’s navigation tabs (search icon gone, can’t find search, search magnifying glass missing, search button disappeared, no search option). In some cases, the navigation buttons may appear invisible or transparent. This has been reported on versions 2026.7.1, 2026.7.2, and 2026.8, and may primarily affect users on iOS 18. The issue persists after updating the app and force-quitting.
  • Status: A fix will be available in version 2026.9. Please update once that’s available in the App Store.
  • Workaround: If possible, updating to iOS 26 may resolve the issue.

International Book Orders Rejected Due to Missing City Field
  • Issue: Some users placing international book printing orders – particularly in Japan and other Asian countries – may receive an “Order has incomplete shipping information” error at checkout, even though all visible address fields were filled in correctly (order rejected, incomplete shipping, can’t place international book order). This happens because the address form for certain countries does not include a separate city field, so the city value is not captured and the order is rejected.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: Use Apple Pay at checkout instead of entering your address manually. Apple Pay provides all required address fields and bypasses this issue. If your Apple Pay address is not in English, please contact support with your shipping details in English.

Important for all international orders: All shipping information must be provided in English. The shipping partner may also request the following per country-specific import requirements:

  • Complete and correct importer name (must be the full name)
  • Valid phone number
  • Complete importer address
  • Correct email address
  • Company name (if any)

You may be contacted to provide additional information or documentation as well. For more details, see Book Printing.

Unable to Add Photos — Upgrade Prompt Shown Incorrectly
  • Issue: Some users on iOS are unable to add photos to journal entries (can’t upload images, photos not working, can no longer add pictures to entries, photo adding stopped working after update). When tapping the photo or paperclip icon — even to add a single photo — the app displays a subscription upgrade prompt instead of opening the photo picker. This affects users on the Basic (free) plan, Plus (legacy), and some Silver subscribers. If you have a Silver or Gold subscription and are unable to add photos, this is a known bug, not a subscription limitation. The Basic plan allows 1 photo per entry, and this is not an intentional change (unable to add photo, photo upload blocked, subscription prompt when adding picture, upgrade screen when inserting image, can’t attach photo to entry).
  • Status: A fix is available in version 2026.7.2. Please update once that’s available in the App Store, and contact support if the issue persists after updating.
  • Workaround: If you’re not currently signed in to a Day One account, signing in should resolve the issue and allow you to add photos again. Alternatively, you can add photos to entries via the web app at https://dayone.me.

Blank ‘On This Day’ Widget
  • Issue: The ‘On This Day’ widget is blank, it just displays a black or blue background with no content.
  • Status: Reported to the engineering team for investigation.
  • Workaround: None at this time.

App Stuck Updating or Downloading (Greyed Out Icon)
  • Issue: Some users on iOS or iPadOS may find that Day One gets stuck updating and does not finish when they open the app (app won’t open, stuck loading, app hangs on launch, update not completing, have to reinstall to get it working). The app icon on the home screen may appear greyed out, dimmed, or show a loading indicator. This can happen when an App Store update gets interrupted, or after an iOS or iPadOS update triggers a re-download of the app. This is a known issue on Apple’s end.
  • Status: Unknown as it needs to be resolved by Apple.
  • Workaround: Long-press the Day One app icon on your home screen and tap Cancel Download. Then open the App Store and re-download Day One. Your journal data is safely stored on our servers, so nothing will be lost. For additional steps, see Apple’s troubleshooting guide: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102632Note: If you see “Don’t Require Face ID” instead of “Cancel Download” when long-pressing the icon, the app is locked with iOS’s app lock feature (available on iOS 18 and later) — not stuck in a download. In that case, tap “Don’t Require Face ID” to unlock the app, or go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode to manage app locks.

Apple Shortcuts tags are not applied (iPhone)
  • Issue: When using the Apple Shortcuts “Create Entry” action with Day One on an iPhone, the Tags field may clear itself while you type or after you insert a variable. When the shortcut runs, the entry is created but the tags are not added.
  • Status: We are aware of the issue and are monitoring it. This appears to be related to how iOS Shortcuts handles the Tags input field, so there is not currently a reliable fix we can provide within Day One.
  • Workaround:
    • Create the entry without tags, then add tags in Day One after the entry is created.
    • If you have access to an iPad, try adding tags there instead.

Day One for Android

Older Entries Go Blank When Opened on Android
  • Issue: Some users on Day One for Android may find that opening certain older entries clears the entry’s title and body text, leaving only the tag (entries going blank, entry content disappears on Android, On This Day entry became empty, entry lost content after opening, blank entry after tapping, entry wiped on Android). The now-blank version can then sync back to the server, causing the entry to also appear empty on the web and other devices. This affected recent versions of Day One for Android, including 2026.12 and 2026.13.
  • Status: We’ve identified and disabled the underlying cause, so this should no longer occur going forward. A permanent fix is also included in the upcoming Day One 2026.14 update, currently in beta.
  • Workaround:
    • As an extra precaution, avoid opening very old entries in the Android app until you’ve updated to 2026.14. To safely check older entries in the meantime, use the Day One web app at dayone.me or a non-Android device (Mac, iPhone, or iPad).
    • If an entry has already gone blank, the original content is likely still in its version history. On a non-Android device (Mac, iPhone, or iPad), open the entry and tap Version History to find and restore the version that still has your text.

Text Selection Limited to a Single Block on Android
  • Issue: When selecting text in an entry on Day One for Android, the selection is limited to a single paragraph or block. Tapping and dragging to extend a selection across multiple paragraphs is not supported, and “Select All” only selects text within the current block (can’t select whole entry, select all only highlights one paragraph, can’t copy entire entry text, text selection stops at end of paragraph, cross-block selection not working on Android).
  • Status: A fix has been implemented and will be available in the 2026.12.1 update.
  • Workaround: Copy text one paragraph at a time, or use Day One on the web at dayone.me to copy across an entire entry.

Tags and Other Metadata Missing in Journal List View on Android
  • Issue: Some users on the Day One Android app may notice that tags, location, weather, and the task completion counter (e.g., “3/4”) no longer appear under entries in the journal list view (tags missing in list view, labels not showing on entries, task count gone, “3/4” disappeared, weather not showing on entry list, location missing from list). The information is still attached to each entry and visible when the entry is opened. This was an unintended change introduced in version 2026.8.
  • Status: Fixed in version 2026.9. Please update to the latest version once it’s available in the Google Play Store.
  • Workaround: Open an individual entry to view its tags, location, weather, and task progress while waiting for the update.

Updated April 29, 2026

Auto-correct issue
  • Issue: The autocorrect feature on the Samsung keyboard is not working.
  • Status: Reported to developers for investigation.
  • Workaround: Use a different keyboard like Gboard or Swiftkey.
Search Not Working for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) Text on Android
  • Issue: On Day One for Android, search may not return results for entries written in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (CJK) if your Android device language is not set to a CJK language (CJK search not working, can’t search Chinese entries, search in Japanese not returning results, Korean text not found in search). Day One uses the device language setting to determine which search engine to use – the standard search engine does not support CJK text.
  • Status: Known limitation. The engineering team is aware and exploring improvements for a future release.
  • Workaround: Set your Android device language to Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (matching the language of your journal entries). This tells Day One to use a search method compatible with CJK text.
