Day One Subscription FAQ
Learn about the benefits of Day One Premium.
What’s included in Day One Silver or Gold?
Day One has three tiers: Basic (free), Silver ($49.99/year), and Gold ($74.99/year). Basic and Free refer to the same plan. Day One Premium was renamed to Silver in March 2026 – if you were a Premium subscriber, nothing has changed except the name.
Silver ($49.99/year) includes everything in Basic, plus: unlimited photos and videos (30 per entry), audio recordings, sync across all devices, drawings, PDF scanning, Strava/Zapier/IFTTT integrations, journal colors and app icons, and 25% off printed journals.
Gold ($74.99/year) includes everything in Silver, plus all AI features (Daily Chat, Entry Highlights, Go Deeper, Title Suggestions, AI Image Generation, Multi-Entry Summary), Day One Labs access, and 35% off printed journals.
See the full Day One pricing and features guide.
What can I do with Day One?
Using Day One provides ongoing, daily benefits, including (but not limited to): memory-augmentation, gratitude, goal-setting, life-logging, deeply personal self-reflection, and countless warm-fuzzies.
Where can I purchase Day One Silver or Gold and how much does it cost?
Silver costs $49.99/year (USD). Gold costs $74.99/year (USD). Both are available via in-app purchase on iPhone, iPad, and Android, and at dayone.me. See our subscribing guide for step-by-step instructions.
Can I skip the free trial and pay immediately?
If you’re eligible for a free trial, there isn’t a way to skip it when subscribing directly, but what you can do instead if you don’t want a free trial, is to purchase a Gift Subscription for yourself and then redeem it at https://dayone.me/redeem. Note that this is the same price as a regular subscription — it is not a discount or promotional offer, just a way to start paying immediately without a trial period.
I have a Gold trial or preview. Will I be charged when it ends?
It depends on how you got access to Gold:
If you were given a free Gold preview as an existing Silver subscriber: No charge will occur. The Gold preview is completely free and your account will automatically return to your Silver plan when the preview period ends. You do not need to cancel anything.
If you signed up for a Gold subscription with a free trial: When the trial ends, it will convert to a paid Gold subscription and you will be charged the Gold rate unless you cancel before the trial expires. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends via:
- iOS/Mac: Settings app > your Apple ID > Subscriptions > Day One > Cancel Subscription
- Android: Google Play Store > Profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Day One > Cancel
- Web: Sign in at dayone.me/settings > Manage > Cancel subscription
If you’re not sure which situation applies to you, check your subscriptions on your device. If Day One appears as a subscription in your App Store, Google Play, or Stripe account with a renewal date, you have a paid trial that will charge you at the end. If no Gold subscription appears there, you have a free preview and no action is needed.
How does billing work when I upgrade from Silver to Gold?
When you upgrade from Silver to Gold, the billing depends on where you originally subscribed:
App Store (iPhone, iPad, Mac): Apple charges the full Gold subscription price upfront. They then calculate the unused portion of your current Silver subscription and issue a separate refund for that amount. The initial charge may look like the full Gold price, but you will receive a refund for the Silver time you already paid for but haven’t used yet.
Google Play (Android): Google handles the upgrade and adjusts the billing for the remaining subscription period.
Day One website (Stripe): Stripe prorates the upgrade. You are charged the difference between Silver and Gold for the remaining billing period, and your next renewal will be at the Gold rate.
Note: Prices vary by region and currency. The prices shown in the app or on the website reflect your local pricing.
How do I use a promo code?
To redeem any promo code or coupon you have been given, including a Gift Subscription, go to https://dayone.me/settings and sign in with your Day One account. There will be an option to subscribe to Silver or Gold. On the payment screen, click/tap to Add Promotion and use the code you have.
Why are you changing to a subscription?
In short, Day One Silver or Gold provides the steady, reliable income needed to maintain and grow the Day One platform. It pays for customer support, QA, maintenance, bug-fixes, and development of new features. Recurring revenue from this subscription ensures the Day One Team will continue to provide the level of quality and reliability you’ve come to expect from us.
I’ve subscribed to Silver or Gold. How do I request a feature?
Thanks for supporting us! We love feature requests and have a great track record of developing and releasing what people ask for. Send your feature requests to our support team!
How do I know you can keep my data safe? What kind of security features does Day One Silver or Gold offer?
Day One offers end-to-end encryption for all users. For more information about how we keep your data secure, check out our Encryption FAQ.
I already paid for Day One previously and I don’t want to pay for a subscription. Am I going to lose features?
No, you will not lose features. All features remain available for purchasers of the app. Day One Classic users are also unaffected, though this version is no longer being updated. All Day One users will continue to receive maintenance updates, as needed. If you subscribe and later cancel, you will retain the account status you had before subscribing.
What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription?
Your data is unaffected by canceling your subscription. You can view, edit, and create entries, and otherwise use all the features of the version of the app you originally downloaded (if you were Basic you’ll have that again; if you were Plus you’ll have that again).
What is a Basic account?
Basic is Day One’s free plan. If you downloaded Day One after June 28th, 2017, you have a Basic account. Basic accounts are limited to account access on one device, one photo per entry, Secure Cloud Backup on one device, and no access to other Silver and Gold features.
I want to keep my free Basic account, but I can’t get past the subscription upgrade prompt. How can I dismiss it?
If you’re seeing a subscription upgrade prompt when signing into your account, it’s probably because you have previously signed into the account on a different device. You can tap the option to “transfer your journal to this device” to move your journals to the new device. If you don’t see that option it may be because you recently transferred your journals to a new device. This can only be done once every 30 days. If you need help transferring your journals to a new device, please contact support for assistance.
My device says “Account Status: Plus”. What does that mean?
It means you purchased Day One (version 2.0 or later) before June 28, 2017, and so you get access to all the features you already paid for. Plus is a static legacy tier – new features released after Plus will only be available to Silver and Gold subscribers.
What Plus includes: Up to 10 photos per entry, unlimited journals, and Day One Cloud services (sync, IFTTT, and end-to-end encryption).
What Plus does not include: Video attachments, audio recordings, PDF or drawing attachments, the 30-media-per-entry limit, AI features, and other Silver or Gold features added after the Plus tier closed.
For the authoritative per-tier feature comparison, see the Day One Pricing & Features Guide.
Because this is based on your purchase history, it’s possible you could see this status on an iOS device but not your Mac (or vice versa).
I am supposed to be Plus, why did I lose my features?
Please use Day One > Settings > Advanced > Restore Purchases to restore functionality. If that does not work, here are some other steps for restoring Plus.
Plus status is device specific, meaning, it only applies to the platform you purchased Day One on (Mac, iOS, or both).
I see I am being charged for Day One on macOS and iOS. What’s going on?
In rare cases it is possible to purchase Day One on both macOS and iOS platforms. To correct that issue please follow our guide for Duplicate Subscription Troubleshooting
I’m being asked to pay for Silver or Gold on a new device, even though I already have a subscription. What should I do?
If you had Day One Silver or Gold on an old device and are being asked to pay for a subscription on a new device, please ensure you are signed in to the correct Day One account.
Then, please try these troubleshooting steps on the device/platform where you originally subscribed: https://dayoneapp.com/guides/troubleshooting/premium-subscription-troubleshooting/
Can I share my Silver or Gold subscription via Apple’s Family Sharing?
Day One Silver or Gold subscriptions cannot be shared in Family Sharing. If you’d like to share the Day One journal experience with your family without an additional Silver or Gold subscription, we recommend creating shared journals.
I received a suspicious or unexpected message about my Day One subscription. Is it legitimate?
Day One communicates with subscribers through several channels:
- Email: Subscription receipts and renewal notices from your purchase platform (Apple, Google, or Stripe)
- In-app notifications: Inside the Day One app
- Text messages (SMS): If you have enabled the Text Messaging feature, Day One may send you automated texts, including subscription renewal notifications confirming your SMS balance has been replenished. These come from the same number you use to create journal entries via text.
If you receive a message you weren’t expecting – especially from an unfamiliar number, email address, or channel – do not click any links. Instead, verify your subscription status directly:
- iOS: Settings app > your Apple ID > Subscriptions
- Android: Google Play Store > Profile > Payments & subscriptions
- Web: Sign in at dayone.me/settings
If you’re still unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact Day One Support and we’ll help you verify it.
